Netball Stats App vs Spreadsheet: Which Should Your Club Use?

A spreadsheet is free and flexible, but a netball stats app saves time courtside and at selection. Here is an honest comparison to help you choose.

The short answer

A spreadsheet works fine if you track basic stats for one team and don't mind manual data entry after every game. A dedicated netball stats app is worth it once you track live during games, manage multiple teams, run trials, or want season trends without rebuilding formulas — it records faster courtside and turns data into decisions automatically.

Where spreadsheets still make sense

Spreadsheets are free, familiar, and endlessly flexible. For a single coach tracking a handful of totals — goals, intercepts, maybe centre passes — a well-built spreadsheet does the job. If you only review numbers after the game and your club has no budget at all, a spreadsheet is a reasonable starting point.

The catch is that everything is manual. Someone has to enter every event, build every formula, and fix it when a row breaks. That cost stays hidden until the season gets busy.

Where spreadsheets fall down

  • Live tracking is clumsy. Typing into cells courtside, on a phone, in the rain, while coaching, is slow and error-prone. Most coaches give up and scribble on paper instead — then lose the paper.
  • Per-quarter and per-player breakdowns get complex fast. The pivot tables that answer "who shot best in the third quarter?" are fiddly to build and easy to break.
  • There's no shared live view. Parents and absent coaches can't follow along, and two people editing the same sheet at once causes conflicts.
  • Season trends mean re-work. Comparing across ten games usually means copying numbers between tabs by hand.
  • Trials are a nightmare in a spreadsheet — rotations, multiple selectors voting, and a fair, defensible result are exactly the things a grid struggles with.

Where a netball stats app wins

A purpose-built app like GameStats is designed for the side of a court, not a desk:

  • One-tap recording. Tap a player, tap an event — done. No cells, no formulas. The stats console is built to be used while you coach, and it works offline and syncs later.
  • A live, shareable dashboard. Score, shooting accuracy, and centre pass success update in real time, and you can share a read-only link with parents or coaches who can't be there.
  • Automatic season trends. Player and team performance roll up across the season with no copy-paste, so you can see who's improving and which combinations work.
  • Fair trials, handled. Trials generate rotations automatically and let selectors vote from their phones, so the final team is backed by data, not the loudest voice in the room.
  • AI summaries. After each game you get a plain-English read of what happened, and you can ask your stats questions directly.

A quick cost comparison

The honest trade-off is money versus time. A spreadsheet costs nothing up front but charges you in hours — building it, entering data, and maintaining it every week. An app has a subscription cost but gives those hours back, and avoids the per-player fees some trial tools charge. GameStats uses one flat annual price for unlimited players, games, and trials — see pricing for the current plans.

How to choose

Ask yourself four questions:

  1. Do you want to track live, during the game? If yes, an app wins clearly.
  2. Do you manage more than one team, or a whole club? Spreadsheets don't scale well across teams; an app does.
  3. Do you run trials or selections? This is where spreadsheets hurt most and an app saves the most.
  4. Do you want season trends without manual work? If yes, an app pays for itself in saved hours.

If you answered "no" to all four, a spreadsheet is genuinely fine for now. If you answered "yes" to any, a stats app will save you time and make your decisions easier to defend.
